Maternity Care
Arrangements for care are made with your own doctor.

Minor Surgery
Some minor surgery can be performed here at the surgery. Referral to this clinic is by your own doctor.

Family Planning
We offer a full range of contraceptive advice, including the fitting of coils, caps and implants.

Cervical Smears
Routine smears are carried out in accordance with current Health Service guidelines. You will be invited to attend a clinic run by our practice nurse or one of our female doctors.

Holiday Vaccinations
Advice on all holiday vaccinations is available from the practice nurse. A fee will be payable for those injections which are not available on the NHS. We are an approved centre for yellow fever vaccinations.

Adult Immunisations
A tetanus booster is recommended every 10 years until you have had a total of five in your life.

Children’s Immunisation/Infant Development Assessment
Child immunisation clinics are held every Wednesday afternoon. It is important that children are fully immunised. Thanks to immunisation, illnesses that are potentially crippling or fatal are now rare and can be prevented.

Appointments will be allocated by the Health Authority for clinics at the surgery. If, however, you cannot make an appointment, please telephone the surgery to cancel. Another appointment will be sent to you. If you find it impossible to attend on Wednesday afternoons please contact the practice nurse to see if alternative arrangements can be made.

Child development checks are carried out by a doctor at six weeks of age and thereafter by the health visitor.

Stop smoking services

Stop smoking services are available both at the surgery or local pharmacies or call 0800 389 3998. You do not need to see a doctor for referral

Chlamydia screning for 16-24 year olds

A free confidential service is available at the surgery, please pick up a slip at reception or for more information go to http://www.c-sure.org.uk/

Sickness Certificates
A doctor’s DSS Certificate is not needed if you are off work for less than a week. This period is covered by a ‘Self Certificate’ (SC1) available from your employer. You need to see your doctor if you are off for a longer time. A fee is charged for private certificates.

Non-NHS Medical Services
Certain services are not available on the NHS and will attract a fee. These include private sick notes, signing of passport forms, private health scheme insurance forms, HGV, pre-employment, fitness to drive medicals and insurance claim forms. These services are available on request and our receptionists will be pleased to help you.

Vaccination Schedule

At two months old:

• Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) (DTaP/IPV/Hib) - one injection
• Pneumococcal infection - pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) - one injection

At three months old:

• Diptheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) (DTaP/IPV/Hib) - one injection
• Meningitis C (meningococcal group C) (MenC) - one injection

At four months old:

• Diptheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) (DTaP/IPV/Hib) - one injection
• Meningitis C (meningococcal group C) (MenC) - one injection
• Pneumococcal infection - pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) - one injection

At around 12 months old:

• Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and meningitis C (Hib/MenC) - booster dose in one injection

At around 13 months old:

• Measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) (MMR) - one injection
• Pneumococcal infection - pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) - one injection

Three years four months to five years old (pre-school):

• Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and polio (dTaP/IPV or DTaP/IPV) - one injection
• Measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) (MMR) - one injection

13 to 18 years old:

• Diphtheria, tetanus and polio (Td/IPV) - one injection

Travel Information

We offer a full range of travel vaccinations for both our own patients and, on a private basis for local residents. Some travel vaccinations are funded by the NHS and those that are not can be provided on a private basis. We are a registered yellow fever vaccination centre.

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements.  Please make it clear to the receptionist when booking that you require travel vaccinations and which countries you will be visiting. An appointment is required for each traveller.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible  - at least 6 weeks before you travel. We have most travel vaccines in stock, however on occassions a second appointment may be required . You must  allow 4 weeks after this appointment before you travel to ensure the vaccine is effective.

If you are planning a long trip to multiple worldwide destinations you should book 4 months in advance

Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.  This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.

Blood Tests

Lister Hospital pathology department operates a weekday walk-in service for blood tests. You must take with you the blood test form provided by your doctor.

Opening times are

• Monday to Friday  (8.00am - 5.30pm)
• Saturday  (9.00am - 1.00pm)

In addition, a clinic is operated at Park Drive Health Centre in Baldock on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. This is by appointment only. Please book appointments with the receptionist here at the surgery.

For those who are unable to travel to Lister Hospital or Park Drive, a limited number of
appointments are available at the surgery. Please book appointments with the receptionist here at the surgery.

STOP SMOKING SUPPORT

If you are planning to stop  smoking it is important to note that it is four times more likely that you will succeed if you have support.

 A stop smoking clinic operates at the surgery every Wednesday afternoon \ evening. Please ask at reception for details. This service is also offered by most of the local pharmacies.
